What impact do the "cultural products" we see every day have on us? How do they impact our identities?

What is HCI?

History, Culture, and Identity -- or HCI as it is more commonly known -- is a course that begins with three questions:  How do you know what you know? How do you know who you are? What is culture -- and how does culture inform your answer to the first two questions?

In the first unit of the course, students explore how we make meaning in various ways, beginning with semiotic theory and branching out to include cinematography and the relationship between form and content in visual culture. This project is the culmination of the second unit, which examines the advent of modernity in the 20th century, looking at the influence of Sigmund Freud, Karl Jung, Edward Bernays and others on the public psyche.

This assignment required students to select a "cultural product" and analyze its impact on identity through a theoretical lens of their choosing.

As is the case with most great projects that happen in Marin Academy classes, this project would not have been possible without the tireless efforts and support of our librarians, Alexandria Brown and Derek Anderson. On behalf of the HCI community -- THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!
